Catcher Yogi Berra had 2 base hits as the dominant Pittsburgh Pirates bested
the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 3 at Crosley Field.

The game started off with Pittsburgh taking the lead in the first scoring 2
runs utilizing 3 base hits. Dale Mitchell opened up the inning nicely when
he lined a one-base hit. Red Schoendienst came to the plate and ripped a
base-knock. Berra then stroked a single scoring a base-hit run. Bobby
Thomson was up next and he grounded into a double play scoring the final run
of the inning. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to
put down the rally.

Billy Pierce(13-8) was the winner allowing no runs in 8 innings. Ellis Kinder
earned his 25th save. Russ Meyer(3-7) ended up with the loss.

When questioned about the loss, Rob Hickok said, 'The fans got to see an
exciting game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it
done this time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the
smiles.'
