Third baseman Sid Gordon ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the New York-AL
Yankees defeated the Washington Nationals in 10 innings by the score of 9 to
8 at Yankee Stadium.

The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings. Finally, New York-AL
pulled the game out in the 10th inning.  Bud Souchock hit a bases-empty home
run resulting in a mighty exciting win for New York-AL and the 43,291 home
town fans in attendance.  It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change
hands 6 times.  

The winning pitcher was Satchel Paige(9-5) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.
Harry Byrd(3-10) took the loss in relief.  He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 1/3
of an inning.  

Wth the win New York-AL now has a record of a league leading 77-54.  With the
loss, the Washington ballclub's record is 48-81.
