Jack Manning tossed a complete game at South End Grounds where the Boston Red
Stockings beat the floundering Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 10 to
9.

Manning(10-6) had a steady outing.  He was reached for 14 hits and 2 walks in
9 innings.  The Philadelphia batters went down meekly in the 9th.  

Lon Knight(4-13) was the losing pitcher.  He was knocked around, surrendering
10 runs in 8 innings.  'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said
Manning, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and
that's all that matters.'
