Fred Merkle had 3 base hits and 6 RBI as the amazing Philadelphia-AL Athletics
topped the Washington Nationals by a score of 16 to 7 at American League
Park.

Merkle had a good day at the plate.  He doubled which plated a run in the 3rd
inning, lined a one-base hit scoring a run in the 4th inning and stroked a
single plating two runs in the 7th inning.  Philadelphia-AL bats were very
productive in the 3rd inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits and the 7th
inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 4 hits.  Philadelphia-AL kept the
pressure on throughout the contest as they scored in 6 different innings.

King Cole(9-9) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Cole got help from
Art Fromme who was credited with his 3rd save.  Eddie Cicotte(4-14) was the
losing pitcher.  He gave up 13 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings of work.
