Larry Corcoran went 9 strong innings and first baseman Cap Anson had 4 hits
and 5 RBI as the Chicago White Stockings ballclub embarrassed the Detroit
Wolverines by the count of 16 to 0.
Anson provided the offensive punch. He hit a single which plated a run in the
1st inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning, doubled
plating a run in the 6th inning and doubled resulting in a run in the 9th
inning. Chicago bats were hot in the 1st inning which saw them plate 5 runs
on 5 hits and the 9th inning which saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits.
Offensively, Chicago was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
It was the 2nd shutout of the year for Corcoran(23-10). Dupee Shaw(7-6) ended
up with the loss. He was touched for 19 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.
When questioned about his counterpart after the game, Shaw was lavish in his
praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be in for a long
night. Corcoran brought his 'A' game with him - he had good stuff and was
able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two bad pitches the
entire game!
