In a great finish the Brooklyn Grooms came back in the top of the ninth and
held on to win over the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 8 to 7 at Union
Park.
Brooklyn came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning plating 3 runs on 5
base hits. Tom Kinslow led off and got things going when he tripled. Mike
Griffin followed next and he lined a single bringing in a run. Griffin was
safe at second on a stolen base. Tom Vickery then uncorked a pitch that was
ruled a passed ball. Tommy Corcoran came up to bat and lashed a one-base hit
scoring one more run. Vickery then had one get away for a wild pitch. Monte
Ward was next and he slapped a single. Two outs later Oyster Burns came up
and he slapped a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Brooklyn
ended up with 13 hits for the game while Baltimore had 8.
The victory was credited to George Haddock(16-9) who went 8 innings, allowing
7 runs. Haddock got help from Bill Hart who was credited with his 3rd save.
Vickery(2-5) was the loser. He was unable to control the Brooklyn offense
and allowed 13 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings.
'The only way this one could have been better', said Haddock, 'was if we had
played it at home.'
