WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Chief Wilson robbed George McBride of an extra base hit.

Ed Walsh allowed only 3 hits resulting in a big goose egg on the scoreboard
for Chicago-NL and catcher George Gibson had 2 base hits as the mighty
Detroit Tigers defeated the woeful Chicago-NL Cubs by a score of 5 to 0 at
Bennett Park.

Walsh(25-14) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
Chicago-NL batters. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and no walks in 9
innings. Walsh whiffed an impressive total of 11 Chicago-NL batters. Both
teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored after that
point.

Jimmy Dygert(4-15) was hit with the loss. Everyone seemed to enjoy the
performance of Walsh - except Chicago-NL. Lee Palmer lamented, 'He just was
'on' this afternoon. He was keeping our guys off balance all game. A fine
game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun game for the hometown fans
- unfortunately we were the visitors!'
