The Philadelphia-NL Phillies defeated the slumping Washington Nationals by a
score of 9 to 6 at Shibe Park.

Washington was unable to climb back into it after Philadelphia-NL went ahead
for good in the 3rd inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The key at-bat
was by Vic Wertz who made the crowd come alive when he laced a single scoring
two baserunners. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, Washington could not
get the win.

Bob Rush(9-4) got the win allowing 6 runs in 6 innings. Rush got relief help
from Curt Simmons who gained credit for his 2nd save. Bob Feller(8-13)
absorbed the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 7 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
