Eddie Mathews had 5 hits and 3 RBI at Connie Mack Stadium as the impressive
Chicago-NL Cubs beat the Philadelphia-AL Athletics 14 to 9.
Mathews provided much of the offense. He banged out a single in the 1st
inning, slapped a one-base hit in the 3rd inning, laced a base-hit in the 4th
inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 6th inning and tripled bringing home
two baserunners in the 9th inning. Even though they scored in 5 different
innings, Philadelphia-AL was not able to pull off the win.
Johnny Sain(9-6) was the winner allowing 8 runs in 8 innings. Mike
Garcia(12-9) was hit with the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 4
innings.
'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Mathews said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'
