In a two run game the Washington Nationals got by the Pittsburgh Pirates by
the score of 7 to 5.
Washington started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of
the first with 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Dom Dimaggio led off and keyed
the rally when he tripled. Joe Dimaggio next to the plate and he tripled
bringing in a run. After an out was recorded, Wes Westrum then cracked a
two-run shot. Pittsburgh tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
The victory was credited to Hal Newhouser(10-9) who went 8 innings, allowing 4
runs. Jim Konstanty earned the save, his 18th. The loss was charged to Billy
Pierce(6-14). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 7 hits and 2
walks in 2 innings.
