One run was the difference at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia-AL Athletics came
in to the game in quite a tailspin, but they were able to snap their 8 game
slide and defeated the Chicago-NL Cubs in 13 innings 6 to 5.
The score was tied at 4 after nine. Philadelphia-AL came out on top in the
13th inning. Ira Thomas led off and he reached on an error. Home Run Baker
was the next batter, but he struck out. Al Bridwell then drew a walk. Solly
Hofman stepped in and he smacked a single plating a run. Hofman took second
on the throw. Tris Speaker stepped into the box and worked the squeeze play
to perfection giving Philadelphia-AL the win much to the delight of the home
town crowd. Philadelphia-AL totaled 15 hits on the afternoon.
The win went to Cy Young(13-6) who allowed 2 runs in 6 innings. Bill
Powell(0-4) was charged with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 6
hits in 5 and 1/3 innings.
The win by Philadelphia-AL is a very welcome one as they have been struggling
in recent days. Their record now stands at 78-53 - only 2-8 in their last
ten games. With this loss, Chicago-NL has a 5-5 record of late, 79-52
overall.
