Al Smith went deep and had 2 RBI and Warren Spahn pitched a complete game at
Griffith Stadium as the Washington Nationals beat the New York-AL Yankees by
the count of 7 to 4.

Washington came up with 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning.  The key
offensive moment was provided by Harvey Kuenn who excited the crowd when he
doubled bringing home two baserunners.  Washington banged out 13 hits on the
afternoon.  

Spahn(14-8) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 4 runs. Tommy
Byrne(3-10) was tagged with the loss.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing 13
hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.
