First baseman Johnny Mize blasted a homerun and had 5 RBI at Cleveland Stadium
as the Washington Nationals pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the
Cleveland Indians by the count of 8 to 7.

Washington came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th
inning with 2 runs on 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Vern Stephens
started the attack as he laced a base-knock. After another out, Joe Dimaggio
came to bat and hit a single. Mize then doubled driving in two more
baserunners. Both teams totaled 15 hits on the afternoon.

Bob Chesnes(8-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 inning. Russ Christopher
earned his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Carl Scheib(5-11) in relief. He
allowed 3 hits and no walks in 2 innings.

'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Scheib said. 'The bottom line is I
didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'
