One run was the difference at Connie Mack Stadium as the New York-AL Yankees
plated 4 runs in the 5th inning and defeated the Philadelphia-AL Athletics 5
to 4.

New York-AL scored 4 runs in the decisive 5th inning when they came up with 3
base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Del Rice who deflated
the crowd as he belted a three-run homer. Philadelphia-AL tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Jake Thies(1-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Thies got help from Don Liddle who earned his 6th save. The
losing pitcher was Johnny Antonelli(10-4). He was hit hard and gave up 8
hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.

Jim Murphy was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's
nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'
