WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Al Evans blocked the plate, saving a run!

Center fielder Wally Westlake had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Fenway Park as the
Boston Red Sox came back dramatically to top the St. Louis Cardinals by the
score of 8 to 7.

Boston came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2
runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Bob Dillinger keyed the rally
when he stroked a single. Lou Boudreau stepped into the batter's box and he
lined a one-base hit. Ted Williams then banged out a single to load the
bases. Westlake stepped in and he doubled making Boston victorious to the
delight of the the home town crowd. This was the kind of game that many fans
love as the lead changed hands 5 times.

Jack Banta(8-4) allowed 2 runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Erv Palica(1-4) suffered the loss in relief. The Boston ballclub's
record now stands at 49-59. With the loss St. Louis now has a record of
54-54.
