Center fielder Bug Holliday had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Mike Smith completed the
game without help from the bullpen as the Columbus Solons were badly beaten
by the Cincinnati Red Stockings, 19 to 4.
Holliday had a good day at the plate. He tripled bringing home two
baserunners in the 1st inning, doubled which scored a run in the 3rd inning,
tripled in the 6th inning and laced a single in the 8th inning. Cincinnati
bats were very productive in the 6th inning which saw them score 7 runs on 5
hits. The Cincinnati offense man-handled the Columbus pitching staff as they
scored in 7 of the 9 innings.
The victory went to Smith(5-11) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. Hank
Gastright(6-11) was tagged with the loss. He was touched for 22 hits and 5
walks in 8 innings.
