WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Grady Hatton robbed Ernie Banks of a base hit.

Larry Doby cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the
Chicago-NL Cubs by the score of 6 to 4 at Wrigely Field.

Cincinnati erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning
plating 3 runs using 3 hits. Enos Slaughter got things going when he smacked
a single. Nellie Fox was next and he banged out a single. Fox got a good
lead and stole second. Pee Wee Reese was up next and he hit a sacrifice fly
scoring a run. Ted Kluszewski came up to bat and was walked intentionally.
Doby joined his teammates in the uprising and doubled plating one more
runner. Grady Hatton followed next and he hit a deep fly scoring the final
run of the inning. Cincinnati had 8 hits for the afternoon.

Ray Crone(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 4
runs. Ernie Johnson recorded his 21st save. The losing pitcher was Robin
Roberts(11-11). He pitched 9 innings allowing 8 hits and 1 walk.

'Wow. That's about all I can think to say.' said Rob Hickok following the
victory. 'If ever a team needed a win, it was us.'
