One run was the difference at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated
the Chicago-NL Cubs 6 to 5.

Pittsburgh came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning
scoring 2 runs on 3 hits.  Mickey Vernon led off and keyed the rally when he
slapped a one-base hit.  Danny O'Connell was the next batter, but he struck
out.  Monte Irvin then cracked a two-run shot.  Pittsburgh had a total of 12
hits for the game.  

Ellis Kinder(3-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. Vern Law earned his 6th save.  Al Widmar(8-9) was the losing
pitcher.  He was knocked around by Pittsburgh, allowing 11 hits and 3 walks
in 7 and 1/3 innings.
