Cy Young went the distance and Freddy Parent had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the
Philadelphia-AL Athletics bested the Cincinnati Reds 5 to 4 at Palace Of The
Fans.

Parent was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day
at their team's expense. He tripled in the 3rd inning, doubled in the 5th
inning, slapped a single which plated a run in the 6th inning and doubled
which brought home a run in the 8th inning. Cincinnati made it exciting in
the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

The victory went to Young(19-8) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. John
Malarkey(11-8) took the loss. He got hammered, allowing 14 hits and 3 walks
in 9 innings.

Doug Hatch was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'
