Larry Chappell hit 3 doubles and scored 4 times as the Chicago White Sox
staged a dramatic comeback over the Philadelphia Athletics by a score of 9 to
8 at Comiskey Park.
Chicago scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning with 3 runs on
4 hits. After an out was recorded, Hal Chase started the attack as he ripped
a base-knock. Ping Bodie stepped up to the plate and he doubled bringing in
a run. Chappell then reached on an error. Shano Collins followed and he
singled driving in one more runner. Collins took second on the throw. Ray
Schalk came up to bat and banged out a single resulting in a mighty exciting
win for Chicago and the 14,526 home town fans in attendance. Chicago had 13
hits for the afternoon.
The winning pitcher was Bill Lathrop(2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 1/3 of an
inning. The loss was charged to Byron Houck(10-8) in relief. Wth the win
Chicago now has a record of 57-64. With the loss, the Philadelphia
ballclub's record is 68-48.
