WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Ed Lopat robbed Elmer Valo of a base hit.

It was a great finish at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled off a
dramatic comeback beating the Philadelphia-AL Athletics by the count of 7 to
6.

Pittsburgh came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs
using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Yogi Berra jump-started the rally
as he smacked a single. Bobby Thomson followed, but he was set down on
strikes. Monte Irvin then cracked a two-run shot giving Pittsburgh the
victory as 31,639 happy fans celebrated wildly. Philadelphia-AL out-hit
Pittsburgh 16 to 11, but Pittsburgh ended up with more runs.

The win was credited to Bob Friend(2-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
The loss was charged to Luis Aloma(6-4) in relief.

Andy Spector was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when asked
about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he volunteered,
'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Jim Murphy, feels right
now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come up on the short
end of one of these!'
