WEB GEMS- Top 8th: Jim Burns robbed Denny Lyons of a Homerun!

In a startling finish the Philadelphia Athletics staged a comeback then held
on to win over the Kansas City Cowboys by a score of 13 to 9 at Exposition
Park.

Philadelphia erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
as they scored 6 runs on 6 base hits. The highlight belonged to Lou
Bierbauer who quieted the home crowd when he ripped a one-base hit bringing
in two baserunners. Philadelphia bats were hot in the 9th inning which saw
them score 6 runs on 6 hits. This was a game of many highs and lows for the
home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.

The victory went to Sadie McMahon(7-3) who went 8 innings, allowing 9 runs.
John Bates(0-1) suffered the loss. He was knocked around by Philadelphia,
allowing 20 hits and 7 walks in 9 innings.

Bates was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
