One run was the difference at Union Park as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the
Cincinnati Reds 9 to 8.
Baltimore scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning scoring 3
runs utilizing 3 base hits. Bill Hawke led off and started the attack as he
lined a base-hit, and an error was also committed. John McGraw stepped up to
the plate and he stroked a single. McGraw got a great jump and stole second
easily. Joe Kelley followed and he drew a walk to load the bases. Billy
Shindle came up to bat and drew a walk bringing in a run. Two outs later
Heinie Reitz came to the plate and doubled driving home another two
teammates. Cincinnati had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Hawke(6-13) went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 8 runs for the win. Edgar McNabb
got the save, his 3rd. Silver King(13-7) was the losing pitcher. He gave up
9 runs in 8 innings of work.
'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Hawke said,
'this was one of those times.'
