Jack Clements rocketed 2 homeruns and scored 3 times and Jack Taylor pitched a
complete game as the impressive Philadelphia Phillies won a dandy at Baseball
Grounds over the Louisville Colonels, 9 to 8.
Philadelphia scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After an out was
recorded, Bill Hallman slapped a one-base hit. Jock Menefee then uncorked a
wild one that found its way to the backstop. After another out, Ed Delahanty
was walked intentionally. Jack Boyle was up next and he singled, and an
error was also committed, giving Philadelphia the victory as 6,003 happy fans
celebrated wildly. A wild and woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 7
times.
Taylor(9-4) got the victory, allowing 8 runs for the game. Menefee(3-6)
suffered the loss. He was touched for 14 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3
innings.
'He gutted it out' Harry Wright said of Taylor. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'
