Left fielder Ted Williams had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cleveland Indians
bested the Philadelphia-AL Athletics in 17 innings 13 to 10 at Municipal
Stadium.
Both teams were tied at 8 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Cleveland
pulled the game out in the 17th inning. Chico Carrasquel led off the inning
for Cleveland when he drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Willie Jones
came to the plate and slapped a single. After another out, George Kell then
clubbed a three-run home run giving Cleveland the victory as 14,361 happy
fans celebrated wildly. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home
town fans, as the lead kept changing - 6 times in all.
Billy Hoeft(2-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 2
runs. Bob G Miller(2-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. By surrending 2
runs in 1 and 2/3 innings his ERA jumped from 3.08 to 3.40.
