9,905 fans watched an exciting game at Redland Field. The indomitable New
York Giants topped the Cincinnati Reds by the slimmest of margins, 6 to
5.
New York took the lead off Rube Benton in the first inning plating one
baserunner on 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Larry Doyle delivered
a base-hit, and an error was also committed. Beals Becker followed next and
he hit a single scoring the run. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but New
York was able to put down the rally.
Rube Marquard(21-5) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory.
Doc Crandall got the save, his 4th. Benton(10-14) was hit with the loss. He
got hammered, allowing 12 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.
John McGraw was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not
going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'
