8,891 fans watched an exciting game at Griffith Stadium.  The Washington
Nationals topped the New York-AL Yankees by the slimmest of margins, 7 to
6.

The score was tied at 6 after nine.  Washington came out the victor in the
12th inning.  Luke Easter stroked a base-hit.  After an out was recorded, Jim
Hegan stepped up to the plate and he laced a single.  Hegan took second on
the throw.  Jerry Priddy then stroked a single giving Washington the win and
sending the home town fans into a frenzy.  Washington had 16 hits overall,
while New York-AL had 13.  

Carl Erskine(3-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 innings and allowing
1 run. Bob Kuzava(5-4) suffered the loss in relief.  He surrendered 4 hits
and no walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.
