Eddie Mathews ripped 2 homeruns at Griffith Stadium where the Chicago-NL Cubs
beat the Washington Nationals 8 to 7.

Mathews provided much of the offense. He lined a one-base hit in the 1st
inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 6th inning and blasted a solo shot in
the 8th inning. This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead
changed hands 6 times.

The win went to Harry Brecheen(6-4) who allowed 1 run in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Joe Dobson got the save, his 2nd. Don Larsen(6-9) was the losing pitcher in
relief.
