Christy Mathewson went the distance and left fielder Spike Shannon had 2 base
hits as the New York Giants won in dramatic fashion over the hapless St.
Louis Cardinals by a score of 6 to 5 at Polo Grounds.
New York came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Fred Merkle started the inning off right when
he laced a single. After an out was recorded, George Browne stepped up to
the plate and he lashed a single. Art Devlin then delivered a one-base hit
scoring a single run. Devlin took second on the throw. Cy Seymour followed
next and he hit a sacrifice fly making New York victorious to the delight of
the the home town crowd. New York totaled 11 hits on the afternoon.
The winning pitcher was Mathewson(14-10) who allowed 5 runs for the game. Ed
Karger(12-12) was charged with the loss. 'Wow, that was fun!', Mathewson
said following the game. 'Once in a while you play a game that reminds you
just why you got into this business to begin with!'
