WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Tom Downey robbed Bobby Byrne of a base hit.

Eddie Plank(9-10) and Chief Bender(14-13) treated the Chicago-NL fans to a
fine pitching duel at West Side Park. The Chicago-NL Cubs eventually emerged
as victors over the Boston-AL Red Sox by the score of 3 to 1.

Chicago-NL took the lead off Bender in the first inning with 2 runs using 2
hits. Bobby Byrne led off and he drew a walk. After an out was recorded,
Birdie Cree came up and he tripled knocking in a run. Rube Oldring was next
to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Dick Hoblitzell was up next and
he doubled scoring the final run of the inning. That was all the runs Plank
needed. The Boston-AL batters went down meekly in the 9th.

Plank was helped out by Ed Willett who recorded his 1st save.
