Al Mattern threw a 3 hitter and Bud Sharpe had 2 base hits as the Boston Doves
beat the slumping St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings by a score of 5 to
3.

The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Boston was victorious
in the 10th inning. Mattern led off and keyed the rally when he drew a walk.
Bill Collins stepped up next and he reached on an error. Two outs later
Sharpe came to the plate and ripped a base-knock plating a run. Doc Miller
followed and he slapped a single to load the bases. Bill Sweeney came up to
bat and drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning. Boston took care of
St. Louis with no trouble in the bottom of the 10th.

The winning pitcher was Mattern(9-19) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Les
Backman(2-7) ended up with the loss. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not
allow an earned run in his 9 and 2/3 innings of work.
