Bill James went the distance and Larry Gilbert had 2 base hits at Robison
Field as the Boston Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 3.

Boston came up with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning.  James led off and
started the attack as he ripped a base-hit.  Herbie Moran came next and he
drew a walk.  Johnny Evers then reached on an error bringing in a run.  Joe
Connolly followed and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the
inning.  St. Louis out-hit Boston 9 to 6, but Boston ended up with more runs.

James(17-9) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Pol
Perritt(14-9) was the losing pitcher.  He pitched 9 innings allowing 6 hits
and 6 walks.

'He gutted it out' George Stallings said of James.  'I was very impressed by
his tenacity.'
