32,277 fans were treated to a fine game at Yankee Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The New York Yankees put 4 runs on
the scoreboard in the 3rd inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to
3.

Washington lost it in the 3rd inning when New York did all their damage as
they scored 4 runs on 4 base hits. That early scoring held up. Washington
out-hit New York 10 to 6, but New York ended up with more runs.

The win went to Ned Garver(9-7) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings. Garver got
help from Ken Heintzelman who earned his 8th save. Warren Spahn(13-7)
absorbed the loss.

'I struggled a bit out there today,' Garver said, 'but I toughed it out and we
got the win.'
