Vern Bickford went 7 strong innings as the sizzling Philadelphia-AL Athletics
defeated the reeling Washington Nationals in 10 innings by a score of 2 to 1
at Shibe Park.

The score was tied at 1 after nine.  Finally, Philadelphia-AL pulled the game
out in the 10th inning.  Eddie Stanky drew a walk.  Jim Piersall came next
and he stroked a single.  Bobby Avila then laid down a sacrifice bunt.  After
another out, Harry Simpson stepped in and he was walked intentionally to load
the bases.  Russ Sullivan came up to bat and banged out a single giving
Philadelphia-AL the victory as 19,811 happy fans celebrated wildly.
Philadelphia-AL had 8 hits for the game and Washington had 3.  

Bob Kuzava(7-8) went 2/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Warren
Spahn(10-16) was hit with the loss.  He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 and
2/3 innings.
