Right fielder Sam Thompson had 3 base hits and 4 RBI as the Detroit Wolverines
staged a dramatic comeback over the struggling Boston Beaneaters by a score
of 19 to 10 at South End Grounds.
An offensive explosion by Detroit in the top of the 9th inning ended any
Boston hopes for a victory as they pummeled Boston for 11 runs on 9 hits.
The crucial at-bat was provided by Thompson who silenced the stadium when he
laced a one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Detroit lit up the scoreboard
in the 5th inning which saw them plate 7 runs on 4 hits and the 9th inning
which saw them score 11 runs on 9 hits. It was roller coaster of a game as
the lead change hands 5 times.
The win was credited to Henry Gruber(6-1) who went 8 innings allowing 10 runs.
Old Hoss Radbourn(14-23) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 21 hits
and 9 walks in 9 innings.
'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Thompson said. 'If you
just keep trying good things can happen!'
