John Clarkson allowed Cap Anson to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
as the Chicago White Stockings beat the Boston Beaneaters by a score of 9 to
5.

Boston fell behind quickly as the Chicago offense came through in the first
inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits.  Abner Dalrymple led off and keyed
the rally when he reached on an error.  After an out was recorded, King Kelly
came up and he drew a walk.  Anson struck out, unable to help the rally.
Fred Pfeffer stepped in and he banged out a single to load the bases.  Ned
Williamson came up to bat and stroked a one-base hit resulting in a run.  Jim
Whitney then threw one that got by the catcher for a passed ball scoring the
final run of the inning.  Chicago had many opportunities throughout the game
and scored in 6 separate innings.  

The victory was credited to Clarkson(2-1) who went the distance, allowing 5
runs. Whitney(27-5) was charged with the loss.  He served up 3 gopher balls
in 9 innings.
