WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Kid Baldwin blocked the plate, saving a run!

Mike Smith cracked a homer and had 3 RBI and he was able to finish what he
started and was credited with a complete game at Jefferson St Grounds where
the Cincinnati Red Stockings beat the Philadelphia Athletics 7 to
6.

Cincinnati had the game winning rally in the top of the 8th inning plating 2
runs on 2 base hits. After two were out Kid Baldwin keyed the rally when he
reached on an error. Smith stepped into the batter's box and he doubled
bringing in a run. Hugh Nicol then ripped a single scoring the final run of
the inning. Philadelphia made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable
to push the needed runs across.

Smith(6-12) allowed 6 runs on the game. Gus Weyhing(27-16) was charged with
the loss. He surrendered 7 runs and 9 hits in 9 innings.

'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Bill Sharsig said. 'It's bad
enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves,
that's really bad.'
