WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Nap Lajoie robbed Jack Graney of a base hit.

Smoky Joe Wood hit one over the fence and scored 3 times and he retired 10
batters on strikeouts as the Washington Nationals won a heart-stopping
victory over the Cincinnati Reds, 6 to 5.

The game was won by Washington with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Wood doubled. George Burns got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim.
After another out, Heinie Zimmerman then laced a base-knock resulting in an
exciting win for Washington and a wild post-game celebration by the home town
fans. Washington rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.

The winning pitcher was Wood(20-14) who allowed 5 runs for the game. Howie
Camnitz(12-8) was the loser in relief. The Washington fans were thrilled by
the performance put forth by Wood, but it was clearly his strikeouts that
they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their
appreciation with a loud cheer.' Gordon Renaud said following the game.
