Indians defeated the Chicago-NL Cubs in 18 innings 7 to 6 at Municipal
Stadium.
Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, Cleveland
prevailed in the 18th inning. Roy Campanella drew a walk. Wally Westlake
stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Eddie Joost
then was walked intentionally. Johnny Hopp was up next and he doubled giving
Cleveland the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Cleveland had
18 hits overall, while Chicago-NL had 14.
Max Surkont(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing
no runs. Dick Weik(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.
