WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Wid Conroy robbed Jimmy Sheckard of a base hit.

Willie Keeler had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Doc Newton had a complete game at
Washington Park as the Brooklyn Superbas beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8 to
6.

Pittsburgh fell behind quickly as the Brooklyn offense came through in the
first inning when they scored 5 runs on 5 hits. The critical plate
appearance was by Charlie Irwin who made the crowd happy when he delivered a
one-base hit scoring two baserunners. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but
their rally came up short.

The victory went to Newton(18-7) who went the distance allowing 6 runs. Harvey
Cushman(0-3) suffered the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 9
walks in 8 innings.

'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Man alive, things were getting awfully
grim,' noted Ned Hanlon. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together
and turn things around!'
