Center fielder Bill Howerton hit 2 doubles as the Philadelphia-NL Phillies
beat the pitiful Washington Nationals by a score of 5 to 0.

Washington never recovered after Philadelphia-NL took the lead in the 4th
inning plating one baserunner on 2 base hits.  Philadelphia-NL had 9 hits for
the game and Washington had 5.  

The victory went to Niles Jordan(1-0) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Bob Porterfield(3-7) ended up with the loss.  He pitched 9 innings
allowing 9 hits and 8 walks.
