Barney Wolfe allowed Andy Spector to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
as the Philadelphia-AL Athletics came back to win one over St. Louis-AL
Browns, 3 to 2.
Philadelphia-AL had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs using
2 hits. After an out was recorded, Jimmy Collins got things rolling when he
reached on an error. Collins was safe on a stolen base. Ducky Holmes then
ripped a one-base hit scoring a single run. Philadelphia-AL continued their
aggressive style with another stolen base. Heinie Peitz came up to bat and
doubled resulting in an exciting win for Philadelphia-AL and a raucous
post-game celebration by the home town fans. Both teams totaled 9 hits on
the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Wolfe(6-10) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Harry Howell(5-8) was the loser in relief.
Andy Spector was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought
game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see
the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this
afternoon!'
