Erskine Mayer held New York scoreless on just 11 hits and he had 4 hits as the
Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Giants in 20 innings by a score
of 2 to 0 at Polo Grounds.
Neither team scored in the first nine innings. Finally, Philadelphia prevailed
in the 20th inning. Fred Luderus led off and he doubled. Possum Whitted
came to the plate and slapped a base-hit. Bert Niehoff then ripped a
base-knock which scored a run. After an out was recorded, Mayer came to bat
and laced a single scoring the final run of the inning. Philadelphia had a
total of 13 hits for the game.
For Mayer(15-14) it was his 7th shutout this year. Hank Ritter(2-2) absorbed
the loss in relief. 'I've been working on a few things in my delivery, and I
think I'm hitting a good groove.' Mayer said after the game. 'I'm ready to
start another game tomorrow!'
