Jim Gilliam had 2 base hits as the smoking-hot Brooklyn Dodgers won in
dramatic fashion over the Philadelphia-AL Athletics by a score of 5 to 4 at
Ebbets Field.

Brooklyn came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning plating 2
runs on 3 base hits. Al Rosen began the Brooklyn spurt when he cracked a
solo homerun. Two outs later Ray Jablonski came up and he tripled. Vic
Wertz then was walked intentionally. Whitey Lockman stepped in and he
singled resulting in an exciting win for Brooklyn and a wild post-game
celebration by the home town fans. Brooklyn and Philadelphia-AL each
finished the afternoon with 10 hits.

Bob Buhl(10-6) was the winner allowing no runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. Billy
Hoeft(13-7) was given the loss. Roy Purcell was ebullient after the game,
'It's great to win a hard fought game like that. Our guys just weren't going
to be denied. And did you see the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a
very enjoyable win this afternoon!'
