Washington put a big number on the board in the 9th inning, which proved too much for Pittsburgh to overcome as they ripped Pittsburgh for 8 runs on 7 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Dimaggio who silenced Forbes Field as he lofted a three-run bomb. For the game Washington out-hit Pittsburgh 18 to 12. The win was credited to Lou Brissie(4-7) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs. Vic Lombardi(2-6) was the losing pitcher in relief. Gordy Renaud was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.'
