Catcher Cal McVey had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Al Spalding went the distance
as the mighty Boston Red Stockings defeated the Philadelphia Athletics by a
score of 16 to 15 at South End Grounds.
Boston scored 11 runs in the 5th inning when they had 7 base hits. The
biggest moment was provided by George Wright who thrilled the crowd when he
banged out a single bringing home two baserunners. Boston bats were very
productive in the 1st inning which saw them score 5 runs on 6 hits and the
5th inning when they had 11 runs on 7 hits. Philadelphia had a chance in the
9th but they came up short.
Spalding(32-3), allowing 15 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Dick
McBride(19-13) was charged with the loss. Boston knocked him around a bit,
as he gave up 16 runs in 8 innings.
In another of a string of victories, Boston extended their winning streak to 6
games.
