Phil Knell slammed the door on Washington and John Sneed had 4 hits and scored
3 times as the Columbus Solons staged a dramatic comeback over the woeful
Washington Statesmen by a score of 14 to 11 at Boundary Field.
A hugely decisive outburst by Columbus in the 9th inning quieted any
Washington hopes for a victory as they ripped Washington for 8 runs on 2
hits. The Columbus offense was great, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.
The winning pitcher was Hank Gastright(17-11) who allowed 11 runs in 8
innings. Knell earned his 2nd save. Ed Cassian(0-1) was hit with the loss.
He was touched for 13 hits and 7 walks in 9 innings.
Gus Schmelz was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at
