The Washington Nationals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field by the score of 9 to 8. Washington scored the winning runs in the top of the 8th inning plating 2 runs on 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, George Burns keyed the rally when he stroked a one-base hit. Burns got a great jump and stole second easily. Larry Doyle then ripped a base-hit scoring a run. Doyle took second on the throw. Heinie Zimmerman came up and he laced a base-knock scoring the final run of the inning. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Smoky Joe Wood(21-14) was the winner allowing 8 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Wood got help from Fred Blanding who earned his 1st save. Jim Scott(4-5) was charged with the loss in relief.
