WEB GEMS- Top 3rd: Jake Daubert robbed George Burns of a base hit.

The Washington Nationals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field by the
score of 9 to 8.

Washington scored the winning runs in the top of the 8th inning plating 2 runs
on 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, George Burns keyed the rally when
he stroked a one-base hit. Burns got a great jump and stole second easily.
Larry Doyle then ripped a base-hit scoring a run. Doyle took second on the
throw. Heinie Zimmerman came up and he laced a base-knock scoring the final
run of the inning. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.

Smoky Joe Wood(21-14) was the winner allowing 8 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Wood got help from Fred Blanding who earned his 1st save. Jim Scott(4-5) was
charged with the loss in relief.
