Shortstop Eddie Joost had 2 base hits as the Washington Nationals defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 2 at Griffith Stadium.

Washington scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning when they came up with 3 base hits.
That early scoring held up. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 3rd
inning with no runs scored after that point.

The win was credited to Murry Dickson(14-18) who went 7 and 2/3 innings
allowing 2 runs. Hal Newhouser got the save, his 4th. Vinegar Bend
Mizell(8-11) was the loser.

'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Dickson, 'I got burned
on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
