WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Ernie Banks robbed Walker Cooper of a base hit.

In a game for the baseball purist, Bob Friend(10-9) and Whitey Ford(20-4)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Pittsburgh Pirates finally emerged
victorious over Chicago-NL Cubs, 2 to 1.

Pittsburgh promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they tallied
2 runs on 1 hit. That was all the offense they were to need. Chicago-NL
made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs
across.

Friend got help from Jim Konstanty who earned his 28th save. 'You have to
give Chicago-NL credit, they fought us tough to the end' Andy Spector said.
'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'
